"The Business of Being Born"
I just watched a documentary on home/natural births called The Business of Being Born. Ricki Lake, a well known talk show host, guides the viewer on her quest to question the social norm of hospital births, train to be a birthing coach, and delve into the actual business behind births in hospitals in the US. There are many valid points in this film, including the stigma surrounding home births, the important role trained midwifes have in a birthing experience, and how birthing in general has become something to be fear in our society. I highly recommend viewing this documentary. I'm not planning on having children any time soon, but I appreciate this film from a sociological stand point.

I have to chime in on this one! I'm going to put the movie on my Netflix cue! Zoe and Zan were both "caught" by a midwife (midwives don't say delivered) with no pain medication and I used a birthing stool, which works with gravity, instead of a hospital bed. I did a lot of research regarding birth options before becoming pregnant. It took a lot of discussion with Mike, but we agreed on midwives that practice in our local hospital. The thing that sold me on midwifery, which means "with woman", is that their philosophy is that giving birth is a normal part of life, not a sickness.
